It was on 20 April 2000 that Puri Jagannadh’s first movie as a director was released. That was Badri, a romantic action film whose hero characterization, dialogues and sophisticated staging were trend-setitng elements.
Itlu Sravani Subramanyam, Idiot, Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi, Sivamani, Pokiri (of course), Desamuduru followed. These box-office hits captured the variety and glory Puri Jagannadh was capable of. Released in the 2000s, these movies made him an iconic filmmaker whose style and honesty, whose racy shoots and nearly impeccable execution abilities earned him a fan base.
From Golimaar to Businessman, from Iddarammayilatho to Heart Attack, from Temper to iSmart Shankar, Puri later consolidated his position with a range of outings.
When he pens a dialogue, theatres erupt.
When he frames a hero, fans celebrate.

He remains one of the few filmmakers in the country to have worked with almost all major superstars of the industry. Pawan Kalyan, Mahesh Babu, Prabhas, Jr NTR, Allu Arjun, Balakrishna, and Nagarjuna delivered some of their most memorable onscreen moments in collaboration with Puri. He is a reason behind elevating the career of Ravi Teja, especially with the massive youthful film, Idiot.
The director-writer-producer has also worked with the younger crop of actors, ranging from Vijay Deverakonda and Nithiin to Ram Pothineni.
Puri remains one of the best dialogue-writers Telugu cinema has ever produced. The sharpness of his characterizations are weaponized by his excellent punchlines.
His next film is going to be with the versatile Vijay Sethupathi. This one is expected to be on a different scale altogether. An ensemble cast is expected to front this as-yet-untitled multi-lingual release.
