The film Shaakuntalam is an adaptation of the famous Indian play Abhijnanashakuntalam, originally written by Kalidasa. Shaakuntalam is a tale of love, honor, self-respect, and war. The mystical world created by the Shaakuntalam team looks very promising and can be enjoyed by all age groups. The makers ensure that this will be an experience that should be remembered for life. This is the reason they have postponed the film just to release it in 3D too.

Shaakuntalam Movie Review:
The story of Shaakuntalam is set in a magical world with all the magical creatures and big sets of forests and war fields. This is a story involving love and self respect with the main character struggling to find her love and then facing rejection from him. The story of Shakuntala has two faces, which are before and after rejection. Prior to the rejection, Shakunatala is a calm and composed beauty, while after the King Dushyanta’s rejection, she becomes strong and fights with self respect. The chemistry between the lead actors was good in the film. The courtroom scenes were impressive with all the royal setup.
The film has Kalidasa’s original story in it, narrating the journey of a pregnant Shakuntala. The VFX in the film took the whole experience to the next level. Also, the 3D experience is something that everyone has to witness. Although the story is known to some people, the main purpose for which this film is made is to educate the millennials and younger generations about Indian mythology. This was clearly achieved by the actors and technicians who worked behind the camera.
Performances:
Samantha Ruth Prabhu, as usual, carried her charm onscreen with her grace and poise. She was one of the highlights of the whole film, through which all the emotions were clearly portrayed. The role was quite challenging for her after her last role, but the transformation she went through to become Shakuntala was clearly visible on the big screen. Also, she was a very good choice for this modern day portrayal of mythology with a strong female character.
Dev Mohan was the perfect choice for King Dushyanta. He has a royal appearance with the solid features of a king. His action sequences and courtroom appearances were too good. This film will just open up several other opportunities for this Malayali actor.
Mohan Babu has a cameo appearance in this film, which was well performed by him. His role as Sage Durvasa was very impressive. He delivered a furious performance with some intense dialogue.
Allu Arha as Bharata was a good choice for the film. Her acting in the film was mature and will be remembered for her characterization for a long time. She made such an impression on the audience watching her.
The other supporting characters did their roles in the film well.
Technicalities:
Gunasekhar has very well attempted to make this mythological drama for the millennials. The narration of the story by him was good. This will be remembered by the younger generation as a chapter for them to learn mythology through movies. He worked in his usual filmmaking style, which is impressive.
The production values of the film were very much visible on the big screens, and it is important to mention Neelima Guna for getting the film on such a huge scale.
Mani Sharma’s background score lifted the film and its experience. There is no need to talk about the songs separately as they have already been well received by the audiences even before the film was released.
End Note:
It has been too long since anyone attempted to make a movie about Shakuntala. This timeless epic is for audiences of every age, especially the younger generation, which seldom gets a chance to witness such massive movies on Mythology daily. This magical fairytale is surely a must watch family entertainer.
