3 years ago on this day, the beautiful love story Sammohanam was released. Directed by Mohana Krishna Indraganti and starring Sudheer Babu and Aditi Rao Hydari in the main roles, Sammohanam follows the life of Vijay (Sudheer Babu,) a children’s book illustrator who holds unfavourable views towards the film industry and its people. When his cinephile father rents out their house for the shoot of Sameera (Aditi Rao Hydari’)s movie, Vijay is initially annoyed. Later, Vijay realises Sameera is unlike what he thought of, erases his prejudice and falls for her. The rest of the movie follows Vijay and Sameera’s love journey.
Sammohanam is so beautiful, with such a realistic depiction of what love is like, instead of an over dramatised love movies usually portray. The movie is striking, with its mellow characterization and poetic storytelling. Mohana Krishna Indraganti truly gave his directorial best. Sudheer Babu as Vijay, a mature and kind guy in love with Sameera, and Aditi Rao Hydari as the beautiful and constricted Sameera shared a lovable chemistry. The movie shines not only with a simple love story but also with the subtle dig it takes at things. It showcases the current state of Telugu cinema, where native talents are pushed aside and swapped for eye candies. The scene where Vijay’s mother explains to him, how rejection is not a failure and how if one can give their heart to someone, it is also perfectly normal for a person to not accept their feelings is simply beautiful. The dynamic between Vijay and his family, Vijay and Sameera and everything came together like a sculpture. The soulful music by Vivek Sagar only adds to the magic. Sammohanam is one of those movies, which you can revisit time to time, reminisce the memories and devour the movie. This simple yet magnificent piece definitely lives up to its title as Sammohanam is truly Sammohanam (enchanting!)
