On this day, 13 years ago, the Allu Arjun and Sheela Kaur starrer Parugu (2008) was released. Parugu movie was a superhit among the audience. Parugu was directed by Bhaskar who is known for his layered and thoughtful depiction of love and family relationships and ownership. Parugu is no exception to this. Parugu revolves around the life of Krishna (Allu Arjun) who falls in love with Meenakshi (Sheela Kaur), the meek daughter of the powerful and overprotective Neelakanta (Prakash Raj.)

Allu Arjun played the street smart and bold Krishna. Allu Arjun’s portrayal of Krishna, a character who gets caught up between the father and daughter was on point. Prakash Raj as Neelakanta proved his versatility yet again. Sheela Kaur shined in her role as Meenakshi. Bhaskar’s direction was truly impeccable in this movie. His depiction of the relationship between parents and children was true to life. Through the character Neelakanta, he portrayed the many fathers who love their kids so much that they suffocate them. Krishna’s free spiritedness and wanting to be with the girl he likes and Meenakashi’s hesitation to accept Krishna’s feelings despite loving him, in the fear of hurting her father is relevant to many youngsters even now.
Parugu not only had amazing acting and direction but also music. The music by Mani Sharma was mesmerizing and sets a perfect tone to the movie. Songs like Nammavemo accurately represent the feelings of Allu Arjun’s character. Parugu won two Nandi awards and was remade in Hindi as Heropanti (2014) and was a success there as well.
Here is to 13 years of Parugu!
