Virupaksha Movie Review:
Virupaksha is a film which is set in a fictional village named Rudravanam in the time period around the 1980s. The villagers burn a couple alive believing they were performing blackmagic. The couple curse the village to face multiple deaths after 12 years. 12 years later the villagers start getting murdered in a mysterious way. The people in the village link these to occult/ black magic. The protagonist of the film Sai Dharam Tej (Surya) sets out to find the real truth behind all the deaths. The film also has a love track between the lead couple Sai Dharam Tej (Surya) and Samyuktha Menon (Nandini) with very good chemistry.
The sets and VFX of the film are the highlights making it the perfect setup for the period it has taken place. The plot has been apt for the time period it was set in with all the black magic and other related stuff. This horror mystical thriller is an engaging plot from the start of the film itself with a very shocking interval bang. Both the lead characters play equally important roles in the whole plot with twists and turns. The climax of the film is surely surprising which is not expected.
Performances:
Sai Dharam Tej, as Surya, gave one of his best performances in Virupaksha. This is the first time he has worked with the thriller genre, which is completely different from his past films. He delivered the performance with confidence. Also, his looks were also different with a classic vintage look that suited him.
Samyuktha Menon undoubtedly has to be the best choice as Nandini. She plays an important role in the film, not just on the love track. Her looks as a village girl and her performance were impressive.
All the supporting actors, especially Sunil, Rajeev Kanakala, Ajay, Brahmaji, and Sai Chand, have to be appreciated for all the hard work they have put into the film, along with the lead actors and others. They had their role in all the transformation, which was very much needed for the plot line.
Technicalities:
Karthik Dandu made a fantastic comeback after his first film, which was long ago. After a gap, the film brought a new breeze with its mystical horror thriller. The visualization he had was successfully established on the sets, and it is exceptional. He had a plan from the initial stages of production, with all the village and cave sets being built for the film. Karthik is successful in making the plot suspenseful with no idea of what will happen in the next scene.
B Ajaneesh Loknath has given the best thrilling background score with a beautiful melody to the film Virupaksha. There is no doubt he is one of the best at delivering an engaging background score, which just makes audiences feel gripped by suspense in a scene. Along with the music, the sound design by Raja Krishnan is also commendable.
Production values are also visible throughout the whole film. BVSN Prasad and Sukumar have bankrolled the film.
All the other technical work has to be appreciated for the magic it has created on the big screens. The cinematography by Shamdat Sainudeen is one of the things that has successfully carried the thrill throughout the film. Also, the VFX and screenplay are the things that have to be specially acknowledged.
End Note:
Virupaksha is a suspenseful ride with no chance for the audience to get distracted. It had an engaging plot with all the thrilling elements throughout the whole time. So, if you are into thrillers and horror genres, then this film, Virupaksha, is a must-watch without a miss.
