Movies have been India’s largest source of entertainment for a long time now. According to an Ormax survey, Telugu speakers lead the lists, and Indians continue to be among the top moviegoers despite the country’s digitalization.
However, according to the survey, over 157 million Indians saw at least one movie in a theater in 2023. The number of people that attend theaters increased by 29% from 122 million in 2022. More significantly, there has been an 8% increase from the 146 million pre-pandemic numbers between January and March 2020.
943 million tickets were purchased by these 157 million persons. This indicates that they saw six movies on average during the year.

Telugu-speaking viewers have topped the lists because they are the most frequent moviegoers in the nation, with reports of over nine films watched annually.
Tamilians, on the other hand, only just missed the top spot on the list of moviegoers, averaging eight films annually, while Punjabis come in third place with an average of five. Hindi-speaking people have only watched three movies on average, according to Ormax’s survey.
‘Sizing The Cinema: 2024’ is a research by Mumbai-based analytics firm Ormax Media that includes these and other results. The study, which is in its third year of publication, is based on research that was done among 8,500 people in urban and rural India in January 2024.
Analysts point out that even with this remarkable rise, India’s movie market is still small in comparison to other continents like America and Europe. The cinema’s 11% reach among India’s population seems low considering the enormous audiences that television and internet streaming services command.
However, the popularity of pan-Indian films and the deeply ingrained practice of attending movies in South India point to a battle against the rise of streaming services.
Ormax Media founder and CEO Shailesh Kapoor highlights the importance of regional variations in movie-going habits, noting that Telugu and Tamil audiences attend more frequently than Hindi and Hollywood fans. These differences can be partially attributed to changes in the uptake of streaming services and Hollywood’s recent setbacks.

A number of superhit films, including Dasara, Virupaksha, Miss Shetty, Mr. Polishetty, Sir (Tamil original), Vaarasudu (Tamil original), Waltair Veerayya, Veera Simha Reddy, Bhagavathi Kesari, Leo (Tamil), Jailer (Tamil) were released in 2023 in the Telugu film industry.
Prabhas starred in Salaar, which smashed box office records and went on to become one of the biggest hits in India ever.
A remarkable number of people attended low-budget films, such as Samajavaragamana, Balagam, Baby, and writer Padmabhushan, at theaters, making them surprising superhits.
On the other hand, 2024 already began with a huge competition at the box office during Sankranthi. while movies like HanuMan, Guntur Karam, The Goat Life (Malayalam original), Manjummel Boys (Malayalam original), Premalu (Malayalam original), and Tillu Square became superhits at the box office, small-budget movies like Geethanjali Malli Vachindi, Ooru Peru Bhairavakona, Om Bheem Bush, worked well at the theaters too.
2024 is to witness some of the most-hyped big-ticket movies including Prabhas’ Kalki 2898 AD, Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2- The Rule, Nani’s Saripodhaa Sanivaaram, Pawan Kalyan’s OG, Jr.NTR’s Devara, Suriya’s Kanguva (Tamil), Pawan Kalyan’s Ustaad Bhagat Singh etc. are all prepping up for their respective worldwide releases, which has a scope to make this year for the movie-goers more iconic.
