South Indian film industry is in its peak stage when it comes to Indian cinema, as both Indian entries shortlisted for the Best Feature Film at the Oscars 2022 are being South Indian. Suriya’s Jai Bhim and Mohanlal’s period flick Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham are the only Indian films selected among the 276 entries that have been shortlisted for the Academy Awards.
Jai Bhim is directed by TJ Gnanavel, released directly on Amazon Prime Video in November 2021 and went on to receive critical accolades. On the other hand, Priyadarshan directorial Marakkar has been shortlisted as well.
Jai Bhim is a hard-hitting courtroom drama inspired by a real-life incident from the 1990s in Tamil Nadu. Suriya essays the character of an advocate Chandru in the film, based on Justice K. Chandru who fought for the deceased tribal man’s wife in real life.

Mohanlal’s Marakkar is set in the 16th century in Calicut and has already bagged three National Awards. The period film is based on Kunjali Marakkar, the admiral of the fleet of Zamorin. Marakkar also features Keerthy Suresh, Kalyani Priyadarshan, Arjun Sarja, Suniel Shetty, Manju Warrier, and Siddique in key roles.
The official Oscars YouTube channel posted a 12 minute 47 second-long scene from the Suriya-starrer social drama. The Oscar nomination voting will begin on Thursday and the final nominations list will be announced on February 8. The award presentation ceremony is slated to take place on March 27 of this year in Hollywood, the United States.
