The digital world is the new theatre in today’s world. Theatres and OTT platforms run hand in hand in today’s uncertain pandemic times. With theatres being shut all across the country due to COVID-19 spread, filmmakers are now open to OTT platforms. While Bollywood has already opened the floodgates with several big films opting for the OTT way, South cinema is also making steady progress. Nani’s upcoming V and Suriya’s much awaited Tamil film Soorarai Pottru, have recently announced their release dates on a popular streaming platform.
During a recent interaction with a TV channel, S.S. Rajamouli said, “though the prospect for OTT platforms looks good in the near future, there is no chance of it replacing the traditional theatre going experience. Even before COVID-19 crisis and the subsequent lockdown, OTT has made its presence felt. However, with the prohibition of mass social gatherings and shutdown of theaters, streaming platforms are making the most of the situation (sic.)”
The Baahubali director added “Once the vaccine is out and the theatres will get reopened, I’m confident that people will throng into cinema halls. As it is the only source of affordable entertainment for common folks. Also, a big ticket film with good pre-release hype and popular star cast will see a wave in its favour (sic.)”
