Sampoorna Ramayanam To Adipurush- Journey Of Ramayana In Indian Cinema

Adipurush is now the talk of the town in the whole nation for several good reasons. Along with the cast and crew of the film, another major reason for the hype is because of the subject they have picked as the plotline. Prabhas and Kriti Sanon starring Adipurush is based on the Indian mythological epic Ramayana written by Valmiki.This is not the first time that a filmmaker has attempted to make Ramayana onscreen. However, Adipurush is certainly the most expensive of all the films ever made in India.

The Indian films from the start have always portrayed the culture and traditions of the nation which had rooted emotions and empathetic stories. Most of the films back in the time had stories which revolved around our history and mythology. One such major choice for the filmmakers was Ramayana along with other mythological stories like Mahabharata and others which depicted real life stories.

The first ever recorded Ramayana in the Indian film industry was Lanka Dahan which was made in 1917. This silent film was directed by Dadasaheb Phalke. After that there came along a lot of stories around Ramayana. There are a few popular Telugu films around Lord Rama and Sita which include Lava Kusa (1963) and three different films with title Sampoorna Ramayanam (1958, 1961, 1971). The recent Telugu film Sri Rama Rajyam also comes in this category. There are several other versions for the narration too including an individual’s perspective, children Ramayana, etc. 

It is no doubt that the first person to come into Telugu people’s mind after talking about any mythological role is Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao Garu. However there have been a few other actors who had the opportunity to appear in this epic including ANR, Jr NTR, Nandamuri Balakrishna, Shoban Babu, Srikanth, and others.

Even though the story of Adipurush and all the other films made on Ramayana depict the same plotline, the audiences feel refreshed watching it multiple times with different casts. Telugu filmmakers always had a new approach on making these films with technologies available at the time and have done a great job over 60 years. This modernization might just enhance the experience this time and audiences will get to experience the essence of the epic in a new flavour.
