“Embracing the spirit of ‘Indianism‘, Devil’s Costume Designer Rajesh reveals the meticulous efforts put forth to enhance the protagonist’s appearance and portray his character authentically. Upon hearing the script from director Abhishek Nama, Rajesh was determined to create costumes that harmonized with Kalyanram’s persona as well as his role as a British Agent with Indian roots. Consequently, the entire team unanimously agreed to make ‘Indianism’ the guiding principle for the hero’s wardrobe, resulting in the introduction of exquisite ensembles.
One of the standout features of the film is the extensive wardrobe changes undergone by Kalyanram – a staggering count of 90 costume alterations. This not only reflects the attention to detail placed on the character’s visual transformation but also adds depth to his portrayal.
To achieve an impeccable and sophisticated aesthetic, Rajesh sourced 60 blazers made of Mohair wool fabric from Italy. This premium fabric not only exhibits superior quality but also exudes elegance and refinement. Complementing the blazers, each ensemble incorporates an Indian touch by featuring a Kurta and Dhoti made from Indian cotton. This serves as a nod to the protagonist’s Indian heritage, incorporating elements of tradition within a contemporary setting.
Each outfit, comprising the blazer, kurta, and dhoti ensemble, consumes an impressive 11.5 meters of fabric, emphasizing the intricacy and grandeur that define the protagonist’s appearance. Additionally, 25 waistcoats have been carefully integrated into the hero’s wardrobe to elevate his style game and add a touch of sophistication.
Further accentuating the protagonist’s attire, a bespoke hanging watch has been designed to perfectly complement the blazer near the pocket. This unique timepiece, acquired from a heritage watch collector in Delhi, adds a touch of regality and sophistication to the ensemble.
Devil marks Rajesh’s 60th film, and his sixth collaboration with Kalyan Ram. With notable past works such as MLA, 118, and Entha Manchivadivira, Rajesh’s vast experience and expertise shine through in his meticulous attention to detail and dedication to creating visually captivating costumes. Furthermore, his talents extend beyond Devil, as he is concurrently working on three other upcoming films, further attesting to his commitment to his craft.
