Vijayakanth, the versatile Tamil actor and politician, passed away on December 28, 2023, at the age of 71. Earlier in the day, the party informed through a post on its official X (formerly known as Twitter) handle that Vijayakanth was admitted to a hospital and put on ventilator support after he complained of breathing problems. His body was brought to his residence and will be taken to his party office shortly. Vijayakanth was a beloved figure in Tamil Nadu, known for his powerful performances in over 150 films and his dedication to social causes.
Born Vijayaraj Alagarswami in Madurai in 1952, Vijayakanth entered the film industry in the late 1970s. He initially played antagonistic roles but soon found success as a lead actor in action films. He became known for his gravity-defying stunts and his portrayal of characters with strong moral values.
Vijayakanth’s breakout role came in the 1981 film “Sattam Oru Iruttarai,” which established him as a commercial hero. He went on to star in a string of successful films throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including “Captain Prabhakaran,” “Chinna Gounder,” and “Vaanathai Pola. ” He was also known for his willingness to experiment with different genres, such as the political drama “Thennavan” and the comedy-drama “Engal Anna. “
In 2005, Vijayakanth entered politics by founding the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) party. He served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016. Despite not achieving electoral success, he remained a vocal critic of the state government and advocated for issues such as farmer welfare and corruption.
Vijayakanth is remembered as a talented actor who entertained audiences for over three decades. He was also a respected politician who worked to improve the lives of the people of Tamil Nadu. His death is a loss to the Tamil film industry and to the state of Tamil Nadu as a whole.
