Some movies are simply masterpieces. Everything comes together perfectly for such movies and makes them evergreen movies. One such movie is the K. Viswanath directorial and Kamal Haasan starrer Sagara Sangamam (1983.) On this day, 38 years ago Sagara Sangamam was released in the theatres and was loved by critics and non critics alike.
This classic movie was showered with accolades including 2 National film awards, Filmfare Award South and Nandi Award. This movie was also featured on the 100 greatest Indian movies of all time list by CNN IBN. Kamal Haasan took a big leap forward as an actor with this movie. His performance as Balu, the genius dancer and a drunkard, a character beaten by love and life, was simply marvellous. Jaya Pradha as Madhavi, Balu’s lover who married another man in a twist of fate was beautiful in her role. S. P. Sailaja as the bratty and arrogant child of Madhavi gave a praiseworthy performance. Master director K. Viswanath once again crafted a meticulous melodrama layered with the themes of unrequited love, unfulfilled dreams, societal expectations and so much more. When we talk about Sagara Sangamam, we cannot not talk about the marvellous music composed by the maestro Ilaiyaraaja. Songs like Thakita Thadimi, Mounamelanoyi Ee Marapurani Reyi are iconic and were brought to life by the singers S. P. Balasubrahmanyam and S. Janaki.
