Analysis:

Shabdham is not a simple script. It is layered, and the plot is not over until it is over. There is an emotional flashback, there are malevolent motives, there are otherworldly aspects. The themes written by writer-director Arivazhagan are impressively built into the script.

Aadhi Pinisetty leads the show in the role of a paranormal investigator whose abilities are suspected by one or more characters at first. On the other hand, the audience are convinced of his skill right from his first scene in the film. The story inhabits the space between crime and ghost investigation. Vyoma is superior in intelligence compared to even the most intelligent cop out there.

The first conversation between Vyoma and Avantika is intriguing. It sets the tone for the nature of equations between them; we get to sense that Vyoma is ahead of others. Is one intimidating the other. Is one trying to manipulate the other? Questions crop up at first, to be resolved in small steps.

The film also features Simran and Laila (as Nancy Daniel) in unconventional roles. Lakshmi Menon is solid as Avantika, a full-fledged character with so much to chew on. Redin Kingsley, the comedian, is used as a character through whom the audience get to learn about the technical nitty-gritty of the paranormal investigation. MS Baskar, and Rajiv Menon are seen in important roles.

Thaman‘s background score is outstanding. Although the second half is relentless in its pursuit of sound and some silent stretches would have helped, the overall experience is good. The cinematography and the production design match the eerie mood.

Verdict:

Shabdham tells a crime and supernatural mystery, anchored by Aadhi Pinisetty’s strong performance. Thaman’s nuanced score and the film’s atmospheric visuals are a big plus. Overall, this is a well-executed suspense thriller.
