In the first week of December, Telangana Cinematography Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy directed officials not to grant permissions for benefit shows in the State anymore. He took the drastic decision in the wake of a young woman breathing her last because of stampede outside a single-screen theatre in Hyderabad during a premiere show of ‘Pushpa 2‘ on December 4th.
On Saturday, the decision was reconfirmed by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy in Assembly. He said that no benefit shows will be allowed to be held in the State during his tenure. “After the recent stampede, I am not going to allow it. The film industry is entitled to concessions, incentives and subsidies. But my government is not in favour of affording them the privilege of ticket price hikes and benefit shows,” the CM said while discussing the Pushpa 2 stampede incident.
Benefit shows and premiere shows attract huge crowds despite hiked ticket rates.
The film industry prefers rate hikes and benefit shows for big-budget movies to recover costs as far as possible. But the latest stance by the Telangana government is bad news for the Nizam territory.
