Mani Ratnam is a director who started making films without any formal training or work experience in the industry. His first film, Pallavi Anu Pallavi (1983), won him the best screenplay award from the state government. In the span of 40 years, Mani Ratnam has only made a little over 25 films in five languages and has made a huge mark on audiences all over India. Over all the films he made his debut with in their respective languages, Mani Ratnam had won several awards, both regional and national.
