‘Maa Nanna Superhero’, produced by V Celluloids and CAM Entertainment, hits the cinemas soon. Its early premieres have been held in different towns.
Story:
Johnny (Sudheer Babu) is brought up by a failed investor (played by Sayaji Shinde) after his biological father’s (Sai Chand) imprisonment. As years passed by, the foster father has developed ill-will towards his son for no mistake of the latter. When the foster dad gets into trouble, it is up to Johnny to bail him out. When Johnny sets out on the mission, fate has other plans.
Analysis:
“Wearing glasses won’t change the world. Just because it was done out of love, doesn’t mean it can’t be wrong”. “Just giving birth isn’t enough. You have to stay with him, raise him right”. These lines form the essence of ‘Maa Nanna Superhero‘, the Dasara release that offers rich content without being arthouse-like.
Director Abhilash Kankara makes his feature-film debut with a heartwarming tale that proceeds like a thriller without the typical twists. The film conveys the intended message about the place of patience and understanding, empathy and peace in relationships. Resentment and tension palpable in the conflict are felt by the audience.
Sudheer Babu leads the show. His restrained acting comes closest to his performance and approach that were visible in ‘Sammohanam’. Sai Chand Tripuraneni and Sayaji Shinde breathe life into a story that possesses themes of love, conflict, loss and reconciliation. Feelings of sorrow, regret, or longing come through their performances.
Aarna Vohra plays Johnny’s girlfriend. Raju Sundaram plays the bar owner whose role is used to lighten the mood. Shashank and Annie are seen as the companions who get to travel with Sai Chand’s character. Vishnu Oi has a small part.
Cinematographer Sameer Kalyani and music director Jay Krish show their talents. The ‘Nanna’ song sung by Nazeeruddin is touching. ‘Kanneellu Leva’, rendered by Kaala Bhairava, is apt. The happy song attempting to generate festive vibes could have been avoided.
Verdict:
‘Maa Nanna Superhero’ is an impressive attempt of a troubled youngster who sets out on a near-impossible mission. The film engages without excessive melodrama.
