Good Bad Ugly, produced by Mythri Movie Makers, was released in theatres this Thursday. What is the movie like? Let’s find out.
Story:
Ajith Kumar is AK, a reformed gangster who has traded bullets for bliss, seeking nothing more than a peaceful life with his beloved wife Ramya (Trisha Krishnan) and their son Vihaan (Karthikeya Dev). But just when he thought he was out, fate pulls him back in — Vihaan is wrongly imprisoned, and AK’s carefully built world begins to crack. For the son he once laid down his weapons for, AK must now cross the Rubicon, stepping back into the shadows of a past he swore he had left behind.
Analysis:
Director Adhik Ravichandran’s style of filmmaking is not immediately familiar. The colour palette he relies on, the kind of characterizations he brings to the fore, the reactions of his characters and the treatment of the songs has always been different. The Mark Anthony fame director makes a comeback with a royal Ajith fan service movie.
Mass moments in the film are atypical. A WhatsApp group chat among gangsters is all it takes for the hero’s insuperable guts to be elevated.
Ajith Kumar commands the screen with his charismatic lead performance, well-supported by able artists around him. Trisha Krishnan’s compelling presence helps his scenes with her. Arjun Das delivers a memorable turn. There is a surprise related to his presence in the film. For a gangster action movie, the spin on his character is fairly entertaining.
Sunil and Jackie Shroff play contrasting characters; while the former is the hero’s trusted aide, the latter is a gangster who might hide bestiality behind his restrained laughs. The extensive ensemble cast, including notable performances from Priya Prakash Varrier, Prabhu, Prasanna and Simran (in a cameo), contributes effectively to the film’s overall dynamic.
This action comedy bursts with creative energy, amplified by Abinandhan Ramanujam’s dynamic cinematography. GV Prakash Kumar‘s songs inject infectious energy, perfectly complementing the film’s pace, skillfully maintained by Vijay Velukutty’s sharp editing.
The USP of the film are the number of creative references to Ajith’s previous movies. The actor’s fans have spotted these: Billa, Varalaru, Mankatha, Villain, Amarkalam, Vaalee, Red, Kireedam, among others. There are hidden references, inside jokes, and subtle nods to the aforementioned works.
Verdict:
Good Bad Ugly delivers a potent dose of Ajith Kumar’s charisma, wrapped in a stylish action-comedy package. Adhik Ravichandran’s unique directorial style, coupled with a plethora of Ajith-centric references, makes this film a must-watch for fans.
