Analysis:

Director Ashwath Marimuthu is known for directing Vishwak Sen’s Ori Devuda, the Telugu remake of his directorial debut Oh My Kadavule (Tamil). With Dragon, he establishes himself as a go-to guy for coming-of-age romantic comedies. He has co-written the story with the film’s male lead, Pradeep, the writer-director-actor of Love Today. The synergies they bring find a perfect blend; their sensibilities benefit the nature of the situational comedy on display in Dragon.

Pradeep’s performance is flawless for the most part. There is a need for young heroes with the kind of youthful ease he brings to the table. Anupama Parameswaran as Keerthy and Kayadu Lohar as Pallavi are very good. They both fit the bill in every way possible. The film also features George Maryan, Indumathy Manikandan, KS Ravikumar, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Mysskin (as the college principal), VJ Siddhu and Harshath Khan.

The film’s nostalgic vibe is evident. The second half of the work combines fun, engaging moments with deeper, heartfelt ones, delivering a well-rounded experience. The ending stands out to you as genuine, authentic, and emotionally truthful, avoiding clichés and forced resolutions. Dragon is commercially viable due to its appeal to a broad audience and its strong execution.

The campus scenes are out of touch with reality here and there, but the spirit behind the scenes is slice-of-life. The music by Leon James is trendy. Niketh Bommi’s cinematography and Pradeep E Ragav’s editing are fine. The Production Design by V Selva Kumar and the action direction by the Vicky-Dilip Subbarayan duo work.

Verdict:

Return Of The Dragon has both artistic merit and mainstream potential.
