In an exclusive chat with TFN, actor Ajay has expressed his happiness about how his character has shaped up in ‘Pottel’. As Patel, a bigoted, extractive feudalist who exploits faith to have his way, Ajay is terrific in the film.
Excerpts:
My character in the film is manipulative in nature. Anger is a trait commonly associated with all negative characters. When you make him cunning, vulnerable and attach a problem to his character, he turns interesting; he doesn’t end up being one-dimensional.
An actor is an actor. I didn’t have any inhibitions while doing the scenes in which I wear a saree. I saw it as a rare opportunity to challenge myself. I had no concerns about how the audience might receive the get-up. Also, it doesn’t suffice if just one character is strong. Other characters around him must be equally solid. ‘Pottel’ ticks all the right boxes on all fronts.
I could connect with the theme of education instantly. As someone who comes from a middle-class background, I was witness to how much my father wished for his children’s education. Education is the one ticket out of economic backwardness in our society.
This film is a thorough emotional experience. The story is not just about the girl child’s education. There is more to it. Within the first 10-15 minutes, you will be transported back in time.
