Zebra, an action thriller produced by Bala Sundaram, SN Reddy, and Dinesh Sundaram, is currently showing in theatres.
Story:
The story is set in a contemporary modern bank where Surya (Satya Dev) and Swathi (Priya Bhavani Shankar) work. The duo fall in hot water when a genuine error leads to a loss of Rs 4 lakhs. If they don’t undo the mistake and return the quantum of money, their situation is going to turn precarious. At stake are their careers. However, Surya’s resourcefulness is of no use here because he inadvertently invites the wrath of a don-like figure named Aditya (Dhananjaya), who needs Rs 5 crores from him.
Analysis:
The title of the movie is a metaphor for black money and white money. The film goes further in grounding Surya as the black horse and Aditya as the white horse of the tale.
The financial con and crime thriller, directed by Eashvar Karthik, doesn’t take off as a regular workplace romance or comedy. Right off the bat, the male lead’s narration draws the audience into its murky world. Satya Dev plays a vulnerable yet dangerous Relationship Manager at a bank with confidence; he is in the Bluff Master zone without having to reflect the swag of that character. Kannada actor ‘Daali’ Dhananjaya gets a separate track of its own; the equations with his romantic partner unfold much after he is introduced.
Sunil’s Gupta has an ego-driven clash with Dhananjaya’s character, adding a new dimension to the story. Sathyaraj, as a comical gangster-like figure named Baba, is another player in the dicey scenario. Amrutha Iyengar as Aaradia, Jeniffer Piccinato as an intimidating bank leader, Satya as the male lead’s partner in crime, and Priya Bhavani Shankar play their parts well.
The additional screenplay by Yuva and dialogues by Meeraqh work in several scenes. “He who is in a position to warn you doesn’t need your suggestions,” is one of the well-written lines. Ravi Basrur’s background score works. The cinematography by Sathya Ponmar is good.
The film could have been more accessible. The deployment of the financial and banking jargon, the conversations related to round-tripping, etc., should have been less complex.
Verdict:
Zebra is a financial con and crime thriller mixed with a gangster element.
