Viduthalai Part 2 (Tamil) was released today in Telugu as Vidudala Part 2. Let’s find out why this film makes for a solid viewing experience.
Story:
The first part ended with the arrest of Perumal (Vijay Sethupathi), a revolutionary activist. A cop named Sunil (Gautham Menon) starts questioning him. The cruel treatment he is subjected to in jail triggers the media and the general public. Perumal is ferried to a secret location. On his way to the location, he shares his love story. Part 2 is the origin story of Perumal. We also get to learn about the story of Karuppan (Ken Karunaas), KK (Kishore), and more. Who will have the final say? Is it the system or the extremist? That’s the question.
Analysis:
Director Vetri Maaran is an expert at making realistic films that don’t fall back on cliches. Many filmmakers have tried to ape him but the original rawness and ingenuity he brings to the table remains difficult to be imitated.
The film under review has Vijay Sethupathi stealing the show through and through. At the same time, he doesn’t steal the story’s thunder. Manju Warrier, Soori, Bhavani Sre, Rajiv Menon (as Chief Secretary to Government of Tamil Nadu), Attakathi Dinesh, and Bose Venkat are apt. Maestro Ilaiyaraaja’s music and R Velraj’s cinematography are excellent.
If you are aware of serious ideological debates in the Left circles, you might be able to appreciate this film better. Besides Communism, this film also touches upon intersectional feminism. The film is both character-driven and ideological in nature.
Merits:
1. The narrative is richly laced with fine writing in the form of dialogues. Nowadays, event films are being made with minimal dialogues. We need dramas like Vidudala to offer freshness.
2. The emphasis on Perumal’s ideology. The film doesn’t abandon the central message it wants to convey.
3. The story functions as both a sequel and a prequel.
4. The romantic track between Perumal and Manju Warrier’s character is engaging.
5. The work dynamics in powerful places have been explored well.
6. The film doesn’t lose sight of the forces it wants to show in a negative light. In doing so, the screenplay is not simplistic but compelling.
7. The characterization of Perumal is a big plus. Kumaresan’s character arc is another highlight.
Verdict:
Vidudala Part 2 is sincere. This finely-executed film is focused and adept.
