The Rise of Unni Mukundan: From Promising Newcomer to Pan-Indian Powerhouse

Once considered a promising newcomer in Mollywood, Unni Mukundan has cemented his place as one of the industry's most bankable stars. He will be portraying Narendra Modi in a big-scale biopic amped up by a host of brilliant technicians: action director King Solomon, production designer Sabu Cyril, cinematographer KK Senthilkumar, and music director Ravi Basrur. These technicians have worked on massive pan-Indian movies like Baahubali, KGF, Salaar, and Kalki 2898 AD in past one decade. So, Unni is arriving on the big stage with the Modi biopic, titled Maa Vande. His journey, which began with his debut in the 2011 Tamil film Seedan, has been one of perseverance and transformation. Initially lauded for his chiseled physique and good looks, Unni Mukundan s acting chops were often questioned. However, he steadily honed his craft, taking on a diverse range of roles that went beyond the macho man image. A significant turning point came with the success of Mallu Singh (2012), which earned him widespread recognition. Over the years, he demonstrated his versatility in films like Vikramadithyan (2014), Jr NTR's Janatha Garage (2016), and Anushka Shetty's Bhaagamathie (2018), showcasing his ability to hold his own against industry veterans and in other language industries. However, the rise and rise of Unni Mukundan reached a new zenith in recent years. The actor, who also ventured into production with Unni Mukundan Films (UMF) , found immense success with his self-produced projects, Meppadiyan and Shefeekkinte Santhosham (both 2022). These films, which he also starred in, not only proved his mettle as a producer but also connected deeply with the audience. His recent action-thriller, Marco , was a pan-Indian hit, becoming the first Malayalam A-rated film to cross the Rs 100 crore mark worldwide.
