Suriya and Jyothika are celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary today, September 11. Before becoming one of Tamil cinema’s most admired real-life couples, the two actors created a memorable on-screen combination through a series of films that showcased their chemistry across different genres. Their journey together began in the late 1990s and eventually led to a real-life love story that continues to remain special for their fans.
Poovellam Kettuppar (1999) marked Suriya and Jyothika’s first film together. Directed by Vasanth, the romantic comedy introduced the pair as co-stars and laid the foundation for their collaborations in the years that followed.
They reunited for Uyirile Kalanthathu (2000), a romantic drama directed by K. R. Jaya. Their combination continued to gain attention before reaching a major milestone with Kaakha Kaakha (2003). Directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, the action thriller featured Suriya as Anbuselvan and Jyothika as Maya, with their relationship forming an important emotional thread in the story.
The duo then explored a different space with Perazhagan (2004), where both actors played dual roles. Their versatility was further seen in Maayavi (2005), a black comedy directed by Singampuli. In June R (2006), Suriya made a special guest appearance alongside Jyothika.
But Sillunu Oru Kaadhal (2006) remains the most special chapter in their on-screen journey. The romantic drama featured them as a married couple and was released on September 8, 2006. Just three days later, Suriya and Jyothika got married in real life on September 11.
Their filmography together may have ended with Sillunu Oru Kaadhal, but their reel-life chemistry had already become part of a much bigger story. Twenty years after their wedding, Suriya and Jyothika’s journey remains one of Tamil cinema’s most cherished examples of a screen pairing that eventually became a real-life partnership.
