Shattering Superstition: Indian Cinema's Bold Take on Belief and Its Impact on Women

This week, Anupama Parameswaran-starrer Paradha has explored the theme of how women are subjected to discrimination and oppression in the name of religious beliefs. Indian cinema, over the decades, has produced numerous films that explore the theme of superstitious beliefs and their devastating impact, particularly on women. Interestingly, many of these films are of recent origin. Here are some notable examples: Devi (The Goddess, 1960) : Directed by Satyajit Ray, this classic Bengali film is a powerful critique of religious superstition. It tells the story of a young woman, Doyamoyee, who is revered as an incarnation of the goddess Kali by her father-in-law, a devout zamindar. The film shows how this blind faith, though initially well-intentioned, isolates her and ultimately leads to her tragic downfall. Bulbbul (2020) : This Hindi-language supernatural thriller is a feminist retelling of a folk tale. It is set in 19th-century Bengal and follows the journey of a young bride named Bulbbul who is subjected to abuse and violence. The film uses the legend of a chudail (a female demon) to explore the themes of patriarchy, superstition, and female empowerment as the protagonist transforms into an avenging force. Stree (2018) : This horror-comedy blends folklore with a social message. While the central character is a male tailor, the film is about a female spirit who abducts men. The story cleverly uses this legend to critique the societal fear and control of women, showing how superstition is often used to mask real-world issues like gender inequality and a lack of respect for women. Chhorii (2021) : A remake of the Marathi film Lapachhapi, this horror film tells the story of an eight-month pregnant woman who finds herself in a remote village plagued by supernatural occurrences. The film delves into the horrors of superstition and patriarchal ideologies, as the protagonist becomes a victim of a vicious plan rooted in bizarre and harmful beliefs about women and childbirth. Virupaksha (2023): This Telugu horror thriller involves a village plagued by mysterious deaths attributed to black magic. While the central investigation is led by a man, the story's catalyst and main plot twist revolve around a woman who is seeking revenge against the village that wrongfully accused her father of black magic, leading to a series of tragic events fueled by superstitious beliefs.
