Saroja Devi: Acclaimed multi-lingual cinema icon is no more

Veteran actress Saroja Devi is no more. She passed away today at the age of 87. Her illustrious career spanned over seven decades across languages, including Hindi. Known affectionately as Abhinaya Saraswathi , Saroja Devi was a true pioneer and is widely regarded as the first female superstar of Kannada cinema. She quickly rose to prominence making her Telugu debut in Panduranga Mahatyam 1957 and starring in numerous successful films until the late 1970s. She also left her mark in Hindi cinema beginning with Paigham in 1959. In 1962 she was crowned Chaturbhaasha Taare , because of her popularity in these four languages. A testament to her enduring appeal and consistent success Saroja Devi holds the unique distinction of being the only Indian actress to play the lead heroine in 161 consecutive films over 29 years between 1955 and 1984. Padma Shri in 1969 and the Padma Bhushan in 1992 are her accolades. Saroja Devi acted opposite the likes of NT Rama Rao in Seetarama Kalyanam (1961), Jagadeka Veeruni Katha (1961) and Daagudu Moothalu (1964). She also graced in many Akkineni Nageswara Rao movies. Saroja Devi was also a fashion icon in her own right. Her saris and blouses, ornaments, hairstyles were copied by girls and women, a Wiki entry says.
