In an unexpected revelation, Superstar Rajinikanth has officially teased a sequel to his 1999 blockbuster Padayappa, dubbing it Neelambari: Padayappa 2. The announcement, dropped in a nostalgic 37-minute video ahead of the film's 25th-anniversary re-release, coincides with Rajinikanth's milestone 75th birthday on December 12, 2025.
Reflecting on the original's feverish reception, where "women broke gates to watch it" – a first in his five-decade career – Rajinikanth mused, "Seeing sequels like 2.0 and Jailer 2, why not Padayappa 2?" He revealed the team is brainstorming a storyline centered on the vengeful Neelambari, immortalized by Ramya Krishnan's fiery portrayal. "If it shapes up well, it will be a festival for fans, just like the first," he teased, hinting at a narrative possibly exploring her promised "next-birth revenge."
Directed by K.S. Ravikumar, the 1999 Padayappa starred Rajinikanth as the eponymous village hero, clashing with Neelambari's obsessive vendetta after spurning her advances. Featuring Sivaji Ganesan, Soundarya, and Abbas, with A.R. Rahman's iconic score, it was released in Telugu as Narasimha. The title track, Meriseti Poova, Chuttu Chutti, Yekku Tholimettu, and Kikku Yekkele were chartbusters.
