Nag Ashwin appeals to PM Modi for GST relief on movie tickets

In a direct appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, acclaimed filmmaker Nag Ashwin has called for a revision of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on movie tickets. In a recent tweet, the director of Kalki 2898 AD welcomed the recent GST reforms but requested a crucial change for the film industry's growth. His plea focuses on extending the 5 GST slab to movie tickets priced up to Rs 250. He argued that the current reality of ticket pricing has moved past the Rs 100 mark, with very few theaters charging that amount. The director emphasized that this change is vital for both the industry and theaters to thrive while ensuring that the middle-class audience remains a key part of the cinematic experience. His appeal highlights the need for policies that support the growth of Indian cinema and its accessibility to a wider audience. Recently, the Mahanati maker explained why Kalki 2 has been delayed. He stated that coordinating the schedules of the film s star-studded cast is a major challenge, noting, Everyone is busy. Additionally, he revealed that the planned action and pre-visualized sequences for the sequel are even grander than the original, requiring extensive preparation. While the director is optimistic about starting the shoot next year, he cautioned that the post-production process is expected to be lengthy.
