Atlee’s birthday offers a good moment to look at his career not through individual blockbusters, but through a simple number: 13 years, five films. Since making his directorial debut with Raja Rani in 2013, Atlee has directed only five movies, yet each film has expanded the scale of his cinema and taken him into a bigger star-driven space.
Raja Rani introduced Atlee as a filmmaker who could package an emotional relationship story with commercial entertainment. The film focused on two people entering marriage with their own pasts and slowly finding a connection. It established the importance of relationships and emotions in his storytelling, something that would continue even as his films became much larger. Interestingly, Atlee recently admitted that he regrets not making another love story after Raja Rani, saying he still has a desire to return to that space.
With Theri, Atlee moved firmly into mass cinema and began his successful association with Vijay. Mersal pushed that combination further with a bigger narrative, multiple shades to its lead character and a strong social angle. Bigil again brought Vijay and Atlee together, this time around football, while combining sports, family emotions and a larger social message.
Then came Jawan. Five films into his career, Atlee moved from Tamil cinema to one of the biggest stars in Indian cinema, Shah Rukh Khan. The film expanded his reach nationally and became the point where his style of emotional storytelling, star elevation, action and social themes reached a much larger audience. Atlee himself acknowledged Vijay and Shah Rukh Khan when he completed 10 years in the industry.
What stands out across these five films is Atlee's ability to combine familiar emotions with the scale expected from a commercial star vehicle. Relationships, family, sacrifice, social issues and heroism repeatedly find space inside his larger-than-life narratives. An Indian Express analysis similarly noted the importance of interpersonal relationships in his mass films.
Now, 13 years after Raja Rani, Atlee is entering his next phase with Raaka. The film brings him together with Allu Arjun and Deepika Padukone and is produced by Sun Pictures.
With the project positioned on a much larger scale, Raaka could mark another significant step in the filmmaker's evolution.
From a four-lead relationship drama to a pan-Indian star vehicle and now an ambitious new project, Atlee's five-film filmography may be small in number, but it clearly reflects a filmmaker who has continued to expand the canvas with every outing.
