From Jai Bhim to Drushyam 2: Films That Deserved a Theatrical Release

The COVID-19 pandemic irrevocably changed the landscape of cinema, forcing many filmmakers to pivot from theatrical releases to direct-to-OTT premieres. While this move brought quality content directly to viewers' homes, it also denied many deserving films the grand stage they were made for. These five films, in particular, stand out as big-screen contents that didn't get their rightful place in cinemas. Suriya's Aakasam Nee Haddhu Raa (Soorarai Pottru) and Jai Bhim are prime examples. Aakasam Nee Haddhu Raa, a biographical drama about a low-cost airline founder, was an emotional and inspiring journey that would have captivated audiences with its scale and powerful performances. Similarly, Jai Bhim, a hard-hitting legal drama based on a true story, had the kind of cinematic gravitas and social commentary that demands to be seen on a large screen, sparking conversations long after the credits roll. Mahaan , starring Vikram, was another film that suffered this fate. The stylistically shot action thriller, with its complex father-son dynamic, would have been a thrilling ride for cinephiles. The vibrant visuals and intense action sequences of Mahaan were tailor-made the big screen. Colour Photo , a poignant romantic tragedy, and Venkatesh's Drushyam 2 , the gripping sequel to a highly popular thriller, also deserved a theatrical run. The emotional depth of Colour Photo and the suspenseful twists of Drushyam 2 would have been amplified by the collective gasp and shared tension of a theatre full of people. A few other films, such as Krishna And Leela , are also seen as deserving of a big-screen release. This Siddu Jonnalagadda movie did get a post-digital theatrical release, though. Sarpatta Parambarai , directed by Pa.Ranjith and starring Arya in the lead, was also acclaimed upon its OTT release.
