Donald Trump's post against movies not made in the US sends shock waves
Published: 2025-05-05
The global screen industry is shocked that US President Donald Trump plans to levy 100 tariff on non-American movies . Here is what Trump has written on social media. The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death. Other Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States. Hollywood, and many other areas within the U.S.A., are being devastated. This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a NATIONAL SECURITY threat. It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda! Therefore, I am authorizing the Department of Commerce, and the United States Trade Representative, to immediately begin the process of instituting a 100 Tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in FOREIGN LANDS . WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN! Stalwarts of different film industries in India will take a call on how to navigate the tariff bomb once full details emerge. At the time of writing, no major film personality has commented anything. A section of the media is of the view that, if Trump's intent based on the social media post is anything to go by, he will have his way. In that case, Telugu and Hindi movies will have to rejig their strategies while releasing their movies in the US. Event movies made for the big screen will be watching the developments closely.
