CBFC Issues Advisory on Proper Display of Film Certification in Promotions

Published: 2026-03-02

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has released an official advisory reminding filmmakers, producers, and theatre owners to strictly follow the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules, 2024 while promoting films. The circular notes that several film advertisements and promotional materials are not correctly displaying certification details, which is a violation of the prescribed regulations.

As per Rule 35 of the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules, 2024, any film that has received a certification — including U/A, A, or S — must clearly mention the certification status in all publicity material after the certificate is issued. This applies to advertisements published in newspapers, hoardings, posters, handbills, and even trailers. The rule also states that promotional content should carry only the officially certified title of the film and must indicate that the movie has been approved for public exhibition.

The CBFC has observed that in many cases promotional campaigns are being carried out without properly mentioning the certificate or by using titles and publicity formats that do not match the certified version. Authorities have treated the matter seriously, stating that failure to follow these guidelines amounts to a breach of the current certification regulations.

Through the advisory, trade bodies, associations, and theatre owners across the country have been instructed to ensure compliance with the rule to avoid action under applicable norms. The communication has also been circulated to regional CBFC offices and industry associations so that awareness reaches all stakeholders involved in film exhibition and promotion.

The move aims to maintain transparency for audiences and ensure that viewers are informed about the age suitability of a film before watching it. By mandating proper display of certification details in publicity material, the CBFC intends to bring uniformity in film promotions and reinforce accountability within the film industry.

Industry members are now expected to carefully follow the certification guidelines in all future promotional campaigns.
