Biggest Piracy Racket Busted in Hyderabad; Six Arrested

The Telangana Cyber Crime Police have dealt a significant blow to illegal movie distribution, announcing the arrest of six individuals believed to be part of the country's largest film piracy gang. Hyderabad Commissioner of Police CV Anand revealed the bust on Monday, stating the operation has broken the back of a gang that has so far caused losses to the tune of thousands of crores to the Indian film industry. Commissioner Anand emphasized the severe financial damage suffered by producers due to the gang's widespread activities. The pirates employed sophisticated methods, utilizing Telegram channels, torrent sites, and a new MO system to distribute copyrighted material. The investigation revealed two primary ways the content was sourced: 1. In-Theatre Recording : Gang members would secretly record films in theaters using cameras. 2. Digital Hacking : They also allegedly hacked digital satellite signals to obtain high-quality copies. Once uploaded, the pirated content served as a vehicle for profit through advertising. The gang generated income by running advertisements for betting and gaming applications alongside the illegal movie streams. The police identified Jana Kiran Kumar as one of the main accused in the operation. Kiran employed a cunning tactic to record movies: he would hide a high-end cellphone camera in his pocket or a popcorn box, keeping the screen off to evade detection. Another key individual arrested is Ashwini Kumar from Patna, described by CP Anand as an expert in hacking.
