AR Murugadoss explains why Tamil cinema lags in the Rs 1,000 crore club

Kollywood filmmaker A.R. Murugadoss has offered his perspective on why Tamil cinema has yet to produce a film grossing over Rs 1,000 crore. During a podcast with a Tamil channel, Murugadoss attributed this to a fundamental difference in the industry's approach to filmmaking. According to the Sikandar director, Tamil cinema often carries a deeper purpose beyond mere entertainment. This, he believes, sets them apart from their counterparts in other film industries. You cannot directly compare Tamil directors with filmmakers from other regions, Murugadoss explained, because our goals are different. He suggested that non-Tamil filmmakers focus primarily on creating films for pure entertainment . ARM's movies have always carried a message. For instance, Ramanaa (remade in Telugu as Tagore) focuses on fighting corruption, Chiranjeevi's Stalin highlights the importance of helping society and creating a chain of good deeds, and Suriya's Ghajini is centered on fighting injustice. His films Thuppakki and Kaththi also delve into significant themes, with the former addressing terrorism and the latter focusing on the struggles of farmers and corporate exploitation of resources.
