Telangana Gaddar Film Awards champions content-driven cinema

The Telangana Gaddar Film Awards, announced recently, have encouraged content-based movies in every way possible. Some of those movies were obvious picks. They have been also popular since they began to be streamed online.

Let’s look at some of the best among those recognized by the state-led awards.

Balagam: This was adjudged the First Best Feature Film for the year 2023. The poignant family drama, directed by newcomer Venu Yeldandi, is produced by Hanshitha Reddy and Harshith Reddy. The versatile Priyadarshi, Kavya Kalyanram, aged artist Sudhakar Reddy, Kota Jayaram, DJ Tillu fame Muralidhar Goud and Rupa Lakshmi feature in major roles.

C/o Kancharapalem: The realistic anthology film marked the debut of Venkatesh Maha. American filmmaker Praveena Paruchuri bankrolled it, while Rana Daggubati backed it under the banner of Suresh Productions. It was adjudged the Third Best Feature Film for the year 2018. The film’s climax remains one of the most-loved ones in recent times.

Kanche: The romantic war film, starring Varun Tej, Pragya Jaiswal, and Nikitin Dheer, is produced by First Frame Entertainment, was the Second Best Feature Film for the year 2015. It was directed by Krish Jagarlamudi. The social commentary in Kanche is why it totally deserves the state award.

Mallesham: The biographical film features Priyadarshi as Mallesham. Also starring Jhansi, debutante Ananya Nagalla and Ananda Chakrapani, it was adjudged the Third Best Feature Film for 2019.

Pathashala: Written and directed by Mahi V Raghav, it won the state Gaddar Award for Second Best Feature Film (year 2014). Nandu, Sai Ronak, Hamood, Anupriya Goenka, Sirisha Vanka, and others acted in different roles. Surya played the college principal.

Ghazi: The war film stars are Rana Daggubati, Kay Kay Menon, Atul Kulkarni, Taapsee Pannu and Satya Dev in different roles. After winning a National Award (Best Feature Film in Telugu), it secured the Third Best Feature Film Award from the TGFA jury.

Pottel: Yuva Chandraa, Ananya Nagalla, Noel Sean and Ajay feature in primarily roles in this film rooted in the traditions and culture of rural Telangana. It won the state Gaddar Award for Second Best Feature Film for the year 2024.
