Deva, the Hindi-language action thriller film, was released in theatres this Friday (January 31st). Directed by Rosshan Andrrews, and produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur, the film is a remake of the Malayalam film Mumbai Police (2013). Co-starring Shahid Kapoor, Pooja Hegde and others, the film’s climax is different from its Malayalam original.
Here is what the critics fraternity has said about the movie:
The Hindu: Here he is a ferocious Animal in uniform who slays with style in the first half. Armed with the licence of daddy issues, as Dev, the star flaunts the angst-ridden charm of Kabir Singh and the chutzpah of Haider and mauls everyone who comes in his path for fun.
NDTV: The plot amendments that provide the film with a new run-up to the climax and the final denouement serve the purpose of keeping the audience guessing. So, even if you remember the Malayalam film and know how it winds up, Deva has something in store for you.
The New Indian Express: Deva completely rests on the shoulders of its lead Shahid Kapoor, who must be lauded for both his acting prowess and his choice of roles. And Shahid does try to lift up the sagging storytelling with his livewire acts but it isn’t enough. At a runtime of two hours and 36 minutes, Deva becomes dreary.
India Today: The film shoulders on Shahid Kapoor. He brings raw energy into the narrative. An unabashed, arrogant man who can make smoke rings while smoking, does not care about the system, and shows off pelvic thrusts. And Shahid brings that version out with ease.
