Sankranthiki Vasthunam has been released in theatres today. Excellent advance bookings preceded its release this Sankranthi. How is the movie? Let’s find out.
Story:
When a renowned corporate honcho named Satya Akella (Srinivas Avasarala) gets abducted by a gang in Hyderabad, the Chief Minister (VK Naresh) is helpless. Upon the advice of a top cop named Meenakshi (Meenakshi Chaudhary), the government requests a highly brainy ex-cop named Raju (Venkatesh) to carry out a secret operation to get Akella rescued. In the process, Raju gets sandwiched between Meenakshi, his ex-girlfriend, and Bhagyam (Aishwarya Rajesh), his suspecting wife.
Analysis:
“Action drama with love triangle in crime story” is how the makers had described Sankranthiki Vasthunam as. The film lives up to the description but there is more. The film is basically an Anil Ravipudi comedy steeped in self-aware spoofy comedy of sorts. Co-writers S Krishna and G Adhinarayana get the basics right.
Venkatesh enjoys when his onscreen characters are laughed at. He has aced this since Nuvvu Naku Nacchav. As an ageing former encounter specialist, he is barely physically agile, we are told. Ravipudi infuses some mocking comedy to make fun of the character’s inability to be effortlessly heroic. Venky is rib-tickling whenever his wife and his ex enter into a duel. The female ego clash leads to hilarious outcomes as the plot progresses.
Meenakshi Chaudhary and Aishwarya Rajesh are enjoyable. The latter, as a village belle, is affable when she becomes a drama queen. Upendra Limaye and Sai Kumar play cops who take digs at each other in turns. Their power dynamics are exaggerated but mirror realities. Their characters are deployed to generate situational police comedy. VK Naresh and VT Ganesh (as the President of the ruling party) are comical. Prithviraj Babloo has a couple of scenes. Muralidhar Goud (as Bhagyam’s father), Pammi Sai and others are able.
Bheems Ceciroleo enlivens the film. Godari Gattu and Meenu are extremely enjoyable in the first half. Blockbuster Pongal is pure masala addition for the festival release. The cinematography by Sameer Reddy is adept. AS Prakash has worked as the art director. Action Director V Venkat
Key Highlights:
1. The songs, of course. Both Godari Gattu and Meenu are placed the right way.
2. The scenes involving Bulli Raju, the hero’s cussing son.
3. The screenplay doesn’t overdo the ‘one husband, two partners’ element.
4. The kidnap drama takes the form of a comedy.
5. The hospital episode involves both slapstick and cop dynamics. 6. The message concerning the place of teachers is like a tasty topping.
Verdict:
Sankranthiki Vasthunam is an enjoyable family-friendly comedy. This is as much an Anil Ravipudi comedy as it is a Venkatesh entertainer.
