Ustad Zakir Hussain is no more. The legendary tabla player, composer, percussionist, and music producer. “He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy cherished by countless music lovers around the globe, with an influence that will resonate for generations to come,” his family said in a statement.
A recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1990, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, and the Ratna Sadsya in 2018, Zakir was awarded the United States National Endowment for the Arts’ National Heritage Fellowship, the highest award given to traditional artists and musicians.
He was also conferred seven Grammy Award nominations, four of which were wins.
