Dude Movie Review: A Fresh, Whistle-Worthy Romantic Action Comedy!

Dude, the romantic action comedy is a blast of fresh energy. Produced by Mythri Movie Makers, the movie was released today in theatres. Here is TFN‘s review of the movie Story: Gagan (Pradeep Ranganathan), a young soul nursing a shattered heart, teams up with his spirited cousin Kundhana (Mamitha Baiju) for an event management venture. Kundhana, who is his uncle’s daughter, lays bare her heart, confessing her love for Gagan. But their world spins into chaos as impulsive choices send their lives careening down unexpected paths. The uncle is played by Sarathkumar, a political heavyweight and a Minister who reveres his dead sister, also named Kundhana. As the story progresses, the uncle’s role in it becomes substantial. Analysis: Debutant director Keerthiswaran narrates a new-age love story that surprises in many places. A number of scenes end in an unpredictable way. There are also whistle-worthy moments, thanks to the dialogue-writing by the director himself. The word ‘prank’ is a recurring presence in the film. These “pranks” by different characters originate from a variety of emotions, both positive and negative. In one of the surprising scenes, a suicide attempt by a major character follows a cheerful song. Another pivotal character reveals his true colours on the day of Kundhana’s engagement. In one of the early scenes, the male lead wields an edible toy gun in the middle of a busy road to play a good-natured prank on a husband. The second half is where the true depth of all the important characters is fleshed out. While the male lead might have been coming across as a comedy hero, he is anything but. While the heroine might have been coming across as somewhat fickle, she is anything but. Pradeep Ranganathan and Mamitha Baiju share an attractive romantic chemistry and deliver strong performances. Pradeep connects deeply with the audience, and his character shows a blend of humor, love, and emotional depth. Mamitha’s portrayal is challenging and exciting. Since her character needed her to look somewhat emotionally unsettled, she was a very good fit as a relative newcomer. R Sarathkumar‘s character represents the older generation’s views on societal standards, which contrasts with the modern relationship arc of his daughter. Hridhu Haroon has an important role, which can’t be discussed without spoilers. Rohini plays Sarathkumar’s sister. The film truly stands out with a solid technical backbone. Sai Abhyankkar’s music provides a new-age zing that perfectly complements the genre. Visually, the movie is a treat; Niketh Bommi’s cinematography is crisp and stylish, beautifully framed by Latha Naidu’s innovative production design and PL Subenthar’s art direction. Adding to the film’s modern appeal is Poornima Ramaswamy’s sharp costume design and the lively choreography by Anusha Viswanathan. Finally, Barath Vikraman’s editing keeps the pacing snappy and engaging. Verdict: A surprising, entertaining blend of new-age romance and unpredictable incidents, anchored by strong performances from Pradeep Ranganathan and Mamitha Baiju. With solid technical execution and sharp writing, this film is engaging throughout.
