Ram Gopal Varma today made official a dystopian movie titled Syndicate, which will be about a “terrifying organization which threatens the very existence of India”.
The legendary director spoke a bit about what lies at the core of its concept. He wrote that street gangs used to terrorize people in the 1970s. With thugs entering politics, smugglers took over. Black marketers and smugglers were run over by globalization and private competition. The underworld, as epitomized by the D Company, arose. And this too was crushed in Mumbai.
RGV observed that there has been no criminal organisation of note in India for the past one and a half decades. “Right now, the intense polarisation between various (sections) in the country makes it ripe for a new kind of criminal organisation to rise. But unlike the organisations of the past, this one is going to join forces with various groups, including police, politics, ultra-rich businessmen and also the military. This is a syndicate,” RGV said.
Varma made it clear that the film won’t be a futuristic one but a contemporary one, coming with the caption, “Only man can be the most terrifying animal“. He used terms like ‘shadowy organization’ to hint at a larger-than-life, edgy, gangster-type subject. “The film will deeply dwell into the cyclical nature of crime and terror proving that while we have our victories the DARK TRUTH is that CRIME and TERROR NEVER DIE (sic),” Ramu wrote.
Saying that cast and crew details will be made official soon, RGV suggested that Syndicate will be his redemption movie.
