Analysis:

Ajith hits it out of the park while being measured. His restraint lends a charming physicality to his character. He doesn’t indulge in impossible fights for the most part of the film. Action is reserved to the final stretches. Trisha Krishnan is good when she shows sadness and fear. Arjun Sarja and Regina Cassandra get equal screen time; their characters are out-and-out negative, something the film’s Trailer had made clear. Ramya Subramanian as Anu, Arjun’s friend, is seen in a short role.

Anirudh Ravichander‘s music is decent. His kind of background score gives way to something subtle this time around. Director Magizh Thirumeni’s direction, combined with Om Prakash’s impressive cinematography, NB Srikanth’s crisp editing, and Supreme Sundar’s stunt choreography, all contribute to the film’s polished feel.

The film is more an emotional road trip thriller drama than a typical Kollywood mass action entertainer. it’s commendable that Ajith, despite being a superstar, has surrendered to the script and to the demands of the genre. Most superstar vehicles steer clear of the compulsions of genre movies. Pattudala is different. It has been made to stay true to its material.

The first half pans out like a slow burn drama until about fifteen minutes before the interval. Post the interval, the plot advances. The highways, the vehicles, the tense mood, and the alien land create a certain mood. There is no unnecessary track. Barring the first song that comes in right at the start, the rest are montages.

Verdict:

If you are a thriller enthusiast, Pattudala is for you. This is a rare superstar film without unrealistic fights.
