Director Mukesh Kumar Singh read multiple articles, watched numerous videos, and visited temples in Tirupati and Sri Kalahasti nearly ten times to learn about Bhakta Kannappa and to get a grip on the subject of his film. Ahead of the devotional epic action drama’s release in theatres on June 27th, the filmmaker today interacted with the media.
“I spent time with several priests of Tirumala and Sri Kalahasti to truly understand the spiritual and cultural depth of Kannappa’s story. I shared my understanding with Manchu Vishnu. I was curious to see how he would embody the role,” Mukesh says. He comes with hands-on experience.
Kannappa has been passionately crafted by a team of experienced technicians, including composer Stephen Devassy. “We brought in technicians from Mumbai and Los Angeles. My assistant directors visited museums to study ancient weapons,” the director reveals.
The film was extensively shot in New Zealand. “Though we initially planned to shoot in New Zealand for just 20 days, the locations were so perfect that we ended up shooting most of the film there. About 80% of the film was shot on real locations, while Akshay Kumar and Prabhas’ scenes were filmed in India. Prabhas’ fans will not be disappointed. His screen time is significant and well-utilized,” the director assures.
The ensemble cast, which also includes Mohanlal, Mohan Babu and Sarathkumar, was handled with maturity by Mukesh. “I have a habit of exchanging detailed scene notes with actors, and once we established that rhythm, things fell into place,” he says.
