Mirai-like Cinematic Staffs: More Than Just Props

In the Teaser of Teja Sajja’s Mirai, co-starring Manchu Manoj, a mystical staff is a highlight. In the history of Hollywood, many noteworthy films have had a staff as a key element, driving the plot forward. In this section, we give you a peek into them.

Harry Potter Series (2001-2011): The Elder Wand has also been known as the ‘Wand of Destiny’, a title evocative of the grandeur and power that has enticed so many wizards, says Pottermore. The powerful magical wand (often depicted as a staff-like stick) is central to the plot, especially in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Part 2.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001-2003): Gandalf the Grey wields a mystical staff that channels his magical abilities. The staffs carried by the Wizards (Istari) are multi-faceted objects, serving both practical and symbolic roles, and acting as a conduit for their powers.

The Hobbit Trilogy (2012-2014): Gandalf’s Staff and Saruman’s Staff: Both wizards use their staffs as conduits for their powers, with Saruman’s staff symbolizing his authority and Gandalf’s aiding in his quests. While they don’t need the staff to be powerful, it certainly aids in their ability to perform grand magical feats.

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981): The Staff of Ra is a mystical staff as a key to locating the Ark of the Covenant by aligning sunlight in a map room, pivotal to the film’s plot. Indiana Jones and Sallah use the headpiece in the Map Room in the lost city of Tanis, Egypt.

The Mummy (1999): The high priest Imhotep and other characters use ancient Egyptian staffs imbued with mystical powers to perform rituals or control supernatural forces. The Staff of Osiris is revealed to be the only weapon capable of truly killing Imhotep, once he has been rendered mortal again.
