‘Matka’, the most expensive film in Varun Tej’s career, is currently showing at the cinemas.
Story:
Based on fictional events in Visakhapatnam, this story chronicles the life of Vasu, a notorious Matka gambler and gangster, from 1958 to 1982.
Vasu, a juvenile convict, develops a bond with the jailor. After his release from the prison, he goes on to work at Poorna Market, wins over a share in the business of his master and thus begins his rise. His rivalry with unethical local power-wielders leads him to find new allies. As he makes new enemies, where does the ultimate challenge come from?
Analysis:
Varun Tej is convincing whatever he is doing in the film. When his character must apply brains, the performer comes across as a strategist. When his character must romance, he comes across as a charismatic boyfriend. So on and so forth. Meenakshi Chaudhary, fresh off the success of ‘Lucky Baskhar’, complements the lead man. Nora Fatehi is seen as a siren in Le Le Raja, a retro pub song. Ravi Shankar plays a cop, Naveen Chandra plays a narrator, and Ajay Ghosh plays a small-time businessman. Sathyam Rajesh plays a fellow traveller in the life of the protagonist. Saloni’s character arc is respectable.
GV Prakash Kumar’s background score is neither overwhelming nor muted. It’s in the right mold. The cinematography and the colour palette are decent.
The rags-to-riches story hinges on the heroism and swag of Vasu. His machinations, gradual rise, his dark dealings, and how his enemies force him to take drastic steps are narrated through the course of the movie.
Since the story spans more than two decades, Vasu’s characterization was difficult in theory. The writing takes care of the nuances. Karuna Kumar pens the screenplay and dialogues as well.
The presence of lurking dangers around the corner should have made Vasu more cautious. The action scenes are well spaced out, though. The dialogues are not verbose, they don’t unnecessarily throw up idioms. How the system is taken for a ride by a set of over-greedy characters is at the core.
Verdict:
Matka tells the story of a stoic gangster-like figure who rose in a murky world. The two halves narrate the tension inherent in his journey. The treatment is raw and gritty. This one enjoys commercial prospects.
