On this day, 17 years ago, the Mani Ratnam directorial Yuva, starring Suriya, Madhavan, Esha Deol, Siddharth, Meera Jasmine and Trisha in the lead roles was released. This political thriller showcased three different people from different strata of the society.
Yuva was a one of its kind movie, not just because of the stellar cast but also because of the story and especially because of Mani Ratnam’s direction. Suriya’s character as a student leader was inspired by real life personality George Reddy from Osmania University and Suriya aced the character to perfection. Madhavan as a goon and Meera Jasmine as his wife delivered authentic performances. Siddharth and Trisha as the couple in love, showcased the love in Urban India. A Mani Ratnam cinema is not complete without the soulful music of A. R. Rahman. The entire tracklist from Yuva was a superhit and got people humming around. Songs like Vachinda Megham, Jana Gana Mana, Deham Thiri were chart busters. The interval fight scene where all the three stories culminate is one of the finest scenes in Indian film history. The background music elevated the movie to another level.
Indian cinema has evolved so much. New directors are taking over the film industry. However, the artistry of Mani Ratnam is endemic to him and him only. Yuva was not only technically brilliant but also had a superior storytelling. Some movies stay forever in the hearts of audiences and Yuva is one such movie.
