‘Kanguva’ is currently showing at cinemas amid high expectations. Territory after territory is witnessing a growing craze for the movie.
Story:
The story unfolds in a non-linear fashion in two different timelines. Francis (Suriya) is a shadow cop in Goa. When he accidentally runs into a boy who has been victimized by a devious experiment, a connection to 1070 AD unfolds. Kanguva (also played by Suriya) was at the centre of a feud between the powerful Kapaala Kona clan, led by the ruthless Rudhira (Bobby Deol), and the Pranavadi Kona clan. A young child, Pulova, is caught in the crossfire of this deadly conflict.
Analysis:
Suriya‘s onscreen restraint is well-known. Playing an ancient warrior for the first time ever, he shows what he can achieve when he is expected to balance theatrical emotional expression and body language. Those of you who are watching ‘Kanguva‘ in the Tamil original would be the best judges of his vocal expression, but the Trailers of the movie gave enough confidence about Suriya’s passion. Bobby Deol’s deliberate performance is measured. Disha Patani plays a playful role as Francis’ estranged girlfriend.
The Goa portions are more in the mold of an action comedy than a rom-com. Yogi Babu and Redin Kingsley play comedic roles in this segment.
The period segments attain larger-than-life proportions in telling a story peopled by characters who present contrasting traits. The dramatic heightening of emotions is a job director Siva handles with conviction.
The introduction of Bobby Deol’s character raises the stakes further. As the story progresses, the layered nature of the period backdrop shows.
Devi Sri Prasad’s background score is sweeping without sounding like it is overpowering the content. This is crucial for a movie made to celebrate warriors. How much of world music has been synthesized is something for experts to analyze, but the BGM is definitely made for the masses. Milan’s production design is impeccable in several portions.
Cinematographer Vetri Palanisamy has done both unconventional genres and conventional commercial movies in the past. ‘Kanguva’ lets him bring his previously untested creativity to the fore.
Verdict:
‘Kanguva’ is an ambitious epic action fantasy with an emotional foundation. Visual ambition, and the highs delivered by the interval and climax are worth it. Suriya holds his forte. The action choreography plays out solidly.
