Thalaivi is a multilingual film being made in Hindi, Telugu and Tamil at the same time. Thalaivi is a political drama about the life of the late J. Jayalalitha, a powerful ex Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Jayalalithaa is fondly addressed as ‘Thalaivi’ by her fans and followers.
Kangana Ranaut is the lead actress in Thalaivi and she will essay the role of Jayalalithaa. Arvind Swami will play the role of M.G. Ramachandran (MGR.) MGR is said to have launched the acting career of Jayalalithaa before she came into politics. Recent news reports indicate Jisshu Sengupta will essay the role of yesteryear actor Sobhan Babu, who was also one of the influential figures in the life of Jayalalithaa, apart from MGR.

Jisshu Sengupta was earlier seen as the antagonist in the Telugu movie Aswathama, which was directed by Ramana Teja and starred Naga Shaurya and Mehreen Kaur Pirzada as the leads. Interestingly, Jisshu Sengupta had watched films of Sobhan Babu and expressed interest to play his role in the movie to the filmmakers.
Thalaivi is directed by A.L. Vijay and is slated for release on June 26th, 2020.
