How composer Stephen Devassy became the unconventional choice for Kannappa

Kannappa features inventive devotional music, as the four songs released so far prove. What made actor-producer Manchu Vishnu choose an unconventional name like Stephen Devassy for the music department?

There is an interesting backstory behind it. Manchu Vishnu was thoroughly impressed with Sacred Chants, an album released by Devassy. Over the years, Devassy has brought out songs dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva, and Lord Vishnu. He has repeatedly collaborated with prominent musicians like AR Rahman and a musician-singer like Shankar Mahadevan.

Manchu Vishnu, back in 2017, contacted Devassy and requested him to set the tunes for Kannappa, his dream project. “Each song in Kannappa resonates with the tastes of the under-30 audience segment of today. The intro scores for the scenes of Prabhas and Mohanlal garu are so lovable. There is a song about five tribes converging at a place. This song, too, will be loved by the audience,” Vishnu says.

Songs from Kannappa:

Shiva Shiva Shankaraa, sung by Javed Ali (Hindi) and Vijay Prakash (Telugu), is the best song from the album. A romantic song (titled Love Song) shot on Vishnu and Preity Mukundan is rendered by LV Revanth and Sahithi Chaganti. Om Namah Shivaya, sung by Shankar Mahadevan and written by Suddala Ashok Teja, was the third song to be released. Sri-Kala-Hasti, narrating the tale of the holy town, is sung by Ariaana Manchu and Viviana Manchu.
