Analysis:

Writer-director Padmavathi Malladi laces the story with large doses of nostalgia through the grandfather’s character. When he is hurt, he literally calls to memory Nehru’s ‘Tryst with destiny’ speech. Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination had left him heartbroken as a child. Childhood influences and how they shape a person’s value system are themes that run through this film. The devotional bhajan, Raghupathi Raghava Rajaram, is deployed for both emotional and ideological reasons.

The title has to be read with pauses: it is Gandhi pilla, Tatha garu, and Chettu the tree. The imposing, lifelike tree is a character whose feelings and emotions go beyond surface-level sentimentality. There is also a magical element involved.

The central character, played by Sukriti Veni (director Sukumar’s daughter), springs a surprise when the village is on the verge of losing its roots, soul and character. This is not to say that there is no struggle in her life and everything is sudden. She is a character with a life of its own. Notice her discomfort when her parents publicize her hitting puberty against her wishes. Notice how her father starts repressing her freedom without any regards for her inner personality. The classroom scenes involving Gandhi and her two male classmates tell us how she has imbibed the Gandhian principle of truth-speaking in life without preachiness affecting the screenplay.

The film rides on nostalgia as much as it relies on its many lighter story beats. What follows the untimely demise of the grandpa steers clear of melodrama. The village life is romanticized, but not beyond a point. To the film’s credit, the solutions on offer are not impractical. Just as Mahatma Gandhi tried to make Khadi a way of life, the Gandhi of this film tries to create something of value.

The performances are neat. None of them sobs or shows joy unnaturally. The Telangana dialect feels authentic. Sukriti Veni, with her minimal, restrained body language, comes across much like her dad. Anand Chakrapani is very good in the role of a helpless Gandhi fan.

Ree’s music is apt. Cinematographers Vishwa Devabattula and Srijitha Cheruvupally do their job well.

Verdict:

Gandhi Tatha Chettu, while staying true to its message, also offers some emotional moments. It’s a meaningful movie with a heart.
