Game Changer, the much-awaited political action entertainer, is finally out in theatres. Here is our review of the pan-Indian big-scale movie.
Story:
The film begins with Chief Minister Bobbili Sathyamurthy (Srikanth) expressing his determination to dedicate the remaining portion of his term to serving the interests of the state. His son Bobbili Mopidevi (SJ Suryah), both evil and hyper-corrupt, doesn’t like it. IAS officer Ram Nandan (Ram Charan) clashes with him after a blast from the past, and a stunning decision made by Sathyamurthy.
What is the stunning decision and how does it alter the destinies of the Ram Nandan-Mopidevi duo? What happened to Appanna (Ram Charan, again), who established the Praja Abhyudaya Party decades ago? Answers to these questions are found in the second half.
Analysis:
Dual role scenarios offer a unique challenge. Ram Charan makes the best use of the opportunity offered by this commercial script. As Appanna, he achieves physical transformation through costume and modulated body language; his stammering problem is used as a plot element. The actor also opts for nuanced changes in mannerisms. As Ram Nandan, he brings out the character growth with elan. His scenes with the baddies look competent because of his acting talent.
SJ Suryah is at his remarkable self, mirroring the pathological eccentricity of his power-hungry character. He looks the part of a maniac. Kiara Advani as Deepika (Ram Nandan’s love interest) is gorgeous in the songs. The romantic track plays out in the first half, leaving the more serious aspect of the hero-heroine equation to the second half.
Anjali as Parvathy (Appanna’s wife) plays her career’s most defining role. Her character turns out to be a protagonist in her own right even after the flashback. Srikanth aces a well-written character. Sunil (as Side Satyam) and Naveen Chandra (as Mopidevi’s partner in crime) are seen in many scenes. Jayaram (as a CM aspirant) and Rajeev Kanakala are apt.
The film is edited by Ruben and Shameer Muhammed. Thirunavukarasu’s cinematography is good. Although NaaNaa Hyraanaa has not been included due to technical issues, Jaragandi, Raa Macha Macha, and Dhop are a treat. SS Thaman’s music and background score are like the film’s second hero.
Game Changer follows the spirit of the conscious cinema Shankar has been known for. There are shades of Oke Okkadu in the way Ram Nandan subjects the corrupt to a shock-and-awe therapy. There are whistle-worthy moments in the form of how he is a step ahead of the powerful.
The second half is where the actual story takes place. What pans out during the interval is not a twist but a drastic plot-turn. There is a difference.
Verdict:
Game Changer is a commercial political entertainer with a distinct plot. Rich production values and sincere execution are the film’s hallmarks. Ram Charan shines forth in scene after scene, especially in the flashback.
