It was in February 2024 that Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy announced state film awards named after the late revolutionary balladeer and poet, Gaddar. “Numerous Telugu film personalities have been requesting me to bring back the Nandi Awards ever since I became the Chief Minister. I also informed them that the awards will be resumed, but will take Late Gaddar‘s name for these prizes,” the CM said at an event. The first edition of the Gaddar Telangana Film Awards was announced recently for the year 2024. Besides, best films from 2014 to 2023 were also recognized.
Gaddar’s name has been prominently heard in film circles. One of the most well-known artists in Telangana‘s cultural history and heritage, Gaddar’s revolutionary spirit is well-known. He has inspired thousands of students and lakhs of lovers of folk music.
Gaddar’s most significant impact on Telugu cinema came through his powerful and thought-provoking songs. Several of his songs found their way into films, lending a voice to the oppressed and resonating deeply with audiences.
Notable film songs include Bandenaka Bandi Katti from Maa Bhoomi (1979), Jam Jammalmarri, Bhadram Koduko, and Madhana Sundari from Rangula Kala (1983). His songs for Orey Rikshaw (1995) were particularly impactful. Podustunna Poddumeeda from Jai Bolo Telangana (2011) is another prominent example of his contribution to cinema through his songs. His songs were also part of Dasari Narayana Rao’s Osey Ramulamma.
Seen as a cultural icon, Gaddar’s “powerful narratives and the folk traditions he embraced inspired filmmakers to explore themes of social realism, rural life, and revolutionary movements in Telugu cinema”.
The Gaddar Telangana Film Awards also includes six special awards: 1. NTR National Film Award. 2. Paidi Jayaraj Film Award. 3. BN Reddy Film Award. 4. Nagi Reddy and Chakrapani Film Award. 5. Kantha Rao Film Award. 6. Raghupati Venkayya Film Award.
